BEIJING, May 6 (Guangming Online)-- An activity celebrating the Vesak Festival 2023 was held Friday in the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing.
“Vesak is a very significant day for Sri Lanka, specially for Buddhists, ” said Sri Lanka's Ambassador to China Palitha Kohona while delivering a welcome speech at the activity.
Kohona introduced that Vesak coincides with the full moon day of the month of May when the Buddha was born, reached enlightenment and passed away.
“This is a day that has been observed in quiet mediation in Sri Lanka since the advent of Buddhism 2,300 years ago, ” added Kohona.
Kohona also noted that Buddhism has been a major cultural influence in Sri Lanka during the long period.
The Vesak Festival is one of the holiest festivals celebrated in Sri Lanka.
About 400 guests participated in the activity, including Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka and China.
