SHANNAN, July 28 (Guangming Online)--Developed by China Three Gorges Corporation, the Chigu Wind Farm is one of the world’s highest-altitude operational wind power projects. Located at Chigu Town, Comai County, Shannan City, in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, the wind farm sits at an elevation of 5,000 to 5,200 meters on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau—often called the "Roof of the World."
As the first wind power project to be connected to Xizang’s main power grid, Chigu marks a breakthrough in renewable energy development at extreme altitudes. Its successful completion and steady performance not only highlight the region’s abundant wind resources but also dispel a long-standing industry belief that high-altitude areas with thin air are unsuitable for wind energy generation. Since beginning operations in 2021, the wind farm has produced more than 512 million kilowatt-hours of electricity—enough to save 204,000 tons of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 482,000 tons, underscoring its environmental significance.
