Don't pick mushrooms on the road! Poisonous mushroom can cause liver failure

Hainan is rich in wild plant resources. Every spring and summer, fungi enter a period of vigorous growth. Some people think that they will not be poisoned if they eat wild mushrooms and wild fruits based on experience, but they enter the hospital without any attentionA reporter from Hainan Daily recently visited the emergency department of major hospitals and found that food poisoning caused by wild mushrooms and wild fruits occurred from time to time.

Experts remind that toxic ingredients of poisonous mushrooms and fruits are complex, and there is no specific treatment. The most effective way to prevent poisoning is not to pick or eat wild mushrooms and fruits.

Eating poisonous mushroom by mistake

Can cause liver failure

Every spring and summer, the emergency department of the provincial people’s hospital will almost receive the cases of poisonous mushroom and wild fruit poisoning.

"Don’t look down on these misfeeds. Some poisonous mushrooms are very toxic, which will cause liver and kidney failure. The death rate of some poisonous mushrooms can reach 80%!"Ouyang Yanhong, deputy director and chief physician of the emergency department of the provincial people’s Hospital, told Hainan Daily that the toxin contained in the poisonous mushroom is complex and varies with different regions, seasons, varieties and growing conditions. The incubation period of toxic mushroom poisoning is generally 2-24 hours, some only 10 minutes. If the poisonous mushroom is eaten by mistake, the poisoning of liver damage type is the most dangerous. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, pain in liver area and so on. Some patients may have mental symptoms. At present, there is no specific treatment for toxic mushroom poisoning, and the poisoning symptoms are serious, the incidence is urgent, and the mortality is high.

The emergency department of the provincial people’s hospital once admitted some cases of collective poisoning caused by poisonous mushrooms taken by some family members. Half an hour after eating, one family suffered from nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. The patients with serious illness suffered from respiratory failure and were admitted to the ICU." We have also received cases of liver failure caused by poisonous mushrooms, requiring liver transplantation."Ouyang Yanhong said there are also life-threatening cases of poisoning caused by students eating roadside leprosy fruit."Our department is the only acute poisoning consultation center in the province, and it is very anxious to receive such cases every year."Said Ouyang Yanhong.

No specific therapy

Prompt vomiting is required

"There is no specific treatment for poisonous mushrooms and fruits by mistake, and because many people do not keep samples or describe them clearly after eating, it is very difficult for doctors to treat them."Ouyang said.

Ouyang Yanhong reminded that once any vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, night sweat, spasm, dizziness, hypothermia and other toxic phenomena are found after eating wild mushrooms and wild fruits, the method of emesis, catharsis, enema and so on should be used as soon as possible to rapidly discharge the toxin. At the same time, we should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible after emesis. It is better to take the remaining mushroom and fruit samples for further diagnosis.

At the same time, we should be alert to the "false recovery period" of poisoning. After treatment, the symptoms of acute gastroenteritis gradually relieved or even disappeared, giving people a sense of recovery. In fact, at this time, the toxin is entering the liver and other internal organs through the blood, damaging the substantive organs, and the disease will rapidly deteriorate after 1-2 days, involving the liver, kidney, heart, brain and other internal organs, with the most serious damage to the liver. Therefore, when the symptoms are relieved in the initial stage of poisoning, we should stay in the hospital and receive treatment actively, observe for a period of time, and ensure the stable improvement of the condition before discharge.

Don’t believe in folk methods

Remember not to eat

Yang Bin, director of the prevention and Control Institute of tropical and chronic diseases of the Provincial Center for Disease Control and prevention, said that there was no reliable way to distinguish poisonous mushrooms among the people, such as looking at the color and shape, the growth environment, the silver ware, the secretion and the maggots and worms.

Some wild poisonous mushrooms are similar to edible mushrooms in appearance. Identification requires professional knowledge and certain equipment. It is difficult to identify them only by naked eyes and according to appearance features such as shape, smell and color, which is very easy to cause poisoning by mistake. In the wild, non-toxic mushrooms are often mixed with toxic mushrooms, which are easy to be contaminated by the mycelium of toxic mushrooms.Even some non-toxic mushroom species attached to toxic plants may be contaminated with toxicity. So even if you eat non-toxic mushrooms, there is still a risk of poisoning.

The fundamental way to prevent poisoning of poisonous mushrooms and wild fruits is to avoid picking, purchasing and eating wild mushrooms and wild fruits that have not been eaten or known.Mushroom planting shall also be conducted under the guidance of a professional agronomist, and shall be planted, picked and sold in accordance with the specifications. It is also important for market regulators to strengthen supervision.
